Charity welcomes Parliamentary support for rights of older pet owners

Pets and people charity the Society for Companion Animal Studies (SCAS) will receive a welcome boost of support this Friday (5th March), when Nigel Waterson MP presents to the House of Commons the Second Reading of his Private Member’s Bill to increase the number of residential care and sheltered housing providers which allow pets to live with their owners.

The benefits of pet ownership

Dogs Trust, the UK’s largest dog welfare charity, is concerned that pet health could be put at risk as owners avoid vet visits to cut costs during the credit crunch. In response, they have teamed up with Vetfone to offer its members unlimited access to professional veterinary advice over the telephone.
Pet ownership costs rocket
Think twice if you are considering giving a pet to someone this Christmas as cost of ownership rises by up to 24%. Pet insurance provider, Intune, has calculated that the average cost of keeping a dog over its lifetime has increased by 24% to £13,000 since 2000. Average costs of keeping a cat over the same period have risen by 23% to over £10,000.
Brave dog Bos to be awarded a PDSA Gold Medal for life-saving devotion.
Bos, a devoted black Labrador-cross from Brampton in Cumbria, is to be awarded a PDSA Gold Medal - the animals' George Cross - for saving the life of 73-year -old Mark Corrie who was missing for two days on the Cumbrian fells.
