Win a copy of 'The Midwife Trilogy' by Jennifer Worth
28/01/2010
This omnibus edition of Jennifer Worth's bestselling books: Call the Midwife, Shadows of the Workhouse and Farewell to the East End, chronicles her career as a midwife from start to finish, from Jennifer's arrival in the war-scarred Docklands as a wide-eyed trainee in the early 1950s, to the demolition of the tenements in the 1960s and the subsequent closure of Nonnatus House in 1978 after ninety-nine years of the nuns' service to the people of Poplar.
It provides a fascinating snapshot of social history and also enables readers to follow Jennifer's personal story, as she discovered the amazing resilience of a population still bearing the scars of war, and the vibrant community of nuns with whom she lived and who taught her the skills of midwifery. In stories that are funny, disturbing and moving in equal measure, we meet prostitutes and abortionists, bigamists and mischievous nuns, and see Jennifer earn the confidence of people whose lives are often stranger than fiction.
Jennifer Worth was a nurse, midwife, ward sister and night sister from 1953 until 1973, working mainly in London. Jennifer Worth trained as a nurse at the Royal Berkshire Hospital in Reading. She then moved to London to train as a midwife. She later became a staff nurse at the Royal London Hospital, Whitechapel, and then ward sister and sister at the Elizabeth Garrett Anderson Hospital in Euston. Music had always been her passion, and in 1973 Jennifer left nursing in order to study music intensively. She gained the Licentiate of the London College of Music in 1974 and was awarded a Fellowship ten years later. She taught piano and singing for about twenty-five years and still sings in choirs all over England and Europe. She plays her piano (a 1904 Bluthner) daily, and is at present studying the entire keyboard works of J.S. Bach. Jennifer married Philip Worth in 1963 and they live together in Hertfordshire. They have two daughters and three grandchildren.
