I must get out more
08/10/2008
Visits to the theatre for my wife and I are all too rare, as pensioners we find ticket prices somewhat more than we can afford nowadays. However I did 'lash out' and buy a couple of tickets for a Bill Kenwright/Really Useful Group presentation of 'Evita' on at our splendid Milton Keynes theatre last evening.
Fantastic! Worth every penny spent. I did not think anyone could outshine the performance of Elaine Paige in the part of Evita but Louise Dearman comes very close to doing just that. Louise comes from Leighton Buzzard just up the road from where we live. She used to work at the MK theatre selling ice creams etc.
When we do go 'out on the town' so to speak, we do tend to put on the style a bit. Nothing over the top, flannels, sports jacket and shirt and tie for me and my wife usually wears a dress instead of the ubiquitous trousers worn by most women of today.
What we did notice was the standard of dress in general. Doing a little people watching, as we all do, I could not help but muse at the awful standard of dress of theatregoers. As a nation are we not one of the most scruffy of dressers? Faded jeans, tee shirts, and that's just the women, in fact any old togs seem de rigueur for a night out! One guy even had shorts, shoes without socks and a grubby (white?) shirt on - it was pouring with rain at the time!
I can see I really must get out more!
