Forgotten family

fotolia 11705272_xsMillions of Brits admit they are either 'too busy' or 'can't afford' to look after their elderly relatives, a survey revealed.

Researchers found as many as one in two people are dreading the moment when their elderly family members need an increased level of care or attention.

While time and money are the biggest considerations for many, others don't have the space in their homes to look after ageing parents or grandparents.

The survey also revealed many people find it a struggle to cram in visits to relatives amid their hectic work schedules.

The importance of lifelong love

Connections image_October_2012People aged 65+ have spoken out about the importance of different types of relationships as we grow older, highlighting the value of companionship – romantic or platonic – in later life.

A new online poll for Age UK reveals that one in eight (12 per cent) people aged 65 and over is currently seeking a new relationship and 62 per cent believe it is important to have a romantic partner as they grow older.

“We don’t need no co-habitation” – grandparents not ready to give up their homes

They don’t want to live with the family because it cramps their love life and they can’t watch what they want on TV. They’d also rather live independently so they can eat what they like and have friends over when they want.

However, we’re not talking about teenagers, but the over 55s.

A study by CarelineUK has found that, faced with a choice of moving in with family or living alone, the majority (68%) of over 55s would take independent living every time.

Of particular concern to a third (35%) of the over 55s was that their love life would suffer if they had to live with family.
