Robert Tanitch reviews Relatively Speaking at Wyndham’s Theatre

Relatively SpeakingAlan Ayckbourn’s comedy of mistaken identities opened in London in 1967 with Celia Johnson, Michael Hordern, Richard Briers and Jennifer Hilary. It was his first commercial success. He was 28 with ambitions to be the English Chekhov. Lindsay Posner’s production is its first West End revival since then.

It had premiered in 1965 at Scarborough where he lived and where all of his 77 plays would continue to be premiered. It was written (said Ayckbourn) to make people laugh when their seaside summer holiday was spoiled by the rain.

Surely Shirley

Dear Mr Young,  

Your May edition is certainly a bumper one. We have 100 copies sent to us at Shirley Institute, which are soon taken by user group members. I am sure everyone enjoys the paper. On reading “ The  Senior moment” page Malcolm & I have had a smile.

Regarding “The Big Issue” article, we are both in our seventies, long retired, and busier than when we were at work. Living in Shirley (West Midlands) for 47 years and Ann born here in 1940 we have a great affection for our village.

Take the 20p test for safe motoring

tyretreadsMost UK motorists are pretty clueless when it comes to tyre tread safety, a new survey has revealed.

The vast majority of motorists are simply unaware of the absolute minimum legal tyre tread depth for their cars or vans.

In a new nationwide survey by the breakdown service Autonational Rescue, just 38% of motorists knew that the correct minimum legal tyre tread depth is in fact 1.6 millimetres.

Did you know that an average of six country pubs close each week? One reader recommended a fine example, the King Arms in Lockerley.

Situated on the Hampshire Wiltshire border a few years ago this pub closed and now has recently been revitalised by new owners.
