Life can be tough for families bringing up children and young people with diabetes. They can face a lot of worry, stress and isolation. With daily injections and testing to deal with, mixed reactions from schools and class mates, the condition can seem a continual challenge.

There are at least 1,370 children and young people with Type 1 diabetes in Wales. It  cannot be prevented and why it develops is unknown. It is not connected with being overweight.  People with Type 1 diabetes have to take insulin either via a pump or by injections several times a day to stay alive.

That’s why Diabetes UK Cymru have organised two special Family Days – one in North Wales and one in the South – especially designed to help children with diabetes as well as mums, dads and siblings. The North Wales event happens at Plas Menai, Bangor on Saturday July 21, followed by the South Wales Family Day in Cardiff City Stadium on Saturday July 28.

There’ll be plenty of opportunities for children and parents to share their experiences and for parents to talk to the experts, network and develop skills and confidence in managing the day-to-day challenges of diabetes at home, school and beyond.
